Assessment is built into every Superhero Spelling lesson through the Show phase.
Assessment in Superhero Spelling happens during the Show section of each weekly lesson.
Children are assessed on the ten focus words from the unit through six short dictation sentences. Each sentence includes one or more of the week’s spelling words, allowing teachers to check spelling in meaningful sentence contexts rather than in isolation.
The dictation sentences can be found in the planning section of the lesson and are also included on the PowerPoint. These slides are hidden from pupils until you choose to reveal them, making it easy to manage the assessment part of the session. The ten weekly spelling words are clearly highlighted on the slides for teacher reference.
Teachers can choose how to run this section:
• read the sentences aloud and have children self-mark or peer-mark for instant feedback
• collect the work for teacher marking, if preferred
Most schools choose self or peer assessment to promote reflection and ownership of learning.
Every six weeks, lessons focus on the statutory (key) words, using memory and recall techniques to support long-term retention. This cyclical assessment structure ensures children revisit and secure essential spellings throughout the year.
